Pre-order Flu Vaccines for Winter 2019/20 NOW

The Flu vaccine has become an important part of the winter months over the past few decades, providing you with protection against the strands of Flu that are going to be the most prevalent over the next year. The Flu vaccination is available from most healthcare organisations every year to all adults and some children, who wish to be protected from the flu and its complications.

Why is the flu vaccine important?

Influenza (flu) can be caught in any period of the year, but it is especially prevalent in the winter months. Flu is much worse than the common cold and can cause patients to be totally incapacitated, bedridden for days.

The Flu vaccine is a proactive way to protect people from the condition which has symptoms including:

  • A high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above
  • Tiredness and weakness
  • A headache
  • General aches and pains
  • A dry, chesty cough
  • It is especially important for people who are at a higher risk of catching the flu. This is emphasised by the fact they are given the vaccine for free, on the NHS.

Who is at risk?

The people who are in the high-risk categories are those who are more likely to have severe symptoms if they contract the flu. The groups include:

  • The main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill
  • Frontline health and social care workers
  • Anyone aged 65 and over
  • Pregnant women
  • Anyone with a long-term medical condition, such as cardiac or respiratory disease, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, learning disability or those who are seriously overweight
  • Anyone who is in one of these high-risk groups is more likely to catch the flu and have serious complications, such as pneumonia. It is strongly recommended that these people have the flu vaccine every year to help protect them.
